Schumacher Lift Station Mitigation Work Begins

As part of the Drumheller Resiliency and Flood Mitigation Project, the Schumacher Lift Station at 5 Street East along Riverside Drive is at a high risk of flooding and needs to be protected.

Tree clearing is necessary for the construction and the surrounding area has been cleared.

The area surrounding the Schumacher Lift Station was the subject of two bird and wildlife sweeps by a qualified professional biologist on May 3 and May 16 and there were no active nests in the area or within 100 m of the area prior to the start of tree clearing.

Mitigation work will now proceed to protect the lift station.

“I’m pleased that we are able to proceed with this work while the water levels are low," explains Darwin Durnie, Chief Resiliency and Flood Mitigation Officer. This area of Drumheller has experienced flooding in the past and now we are able to protect this part of the community.”

This fill work will commence in the next few weeks and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2021. Bird sweeps will be conducted during migratory bird season to confirm construction can continue.

In accordance with our vegetation strategy that has been developed with the guidance of a landscape architect, trees removed during this project will be replanted at 5:1 with appropriate tree and bush species.
