Drumheller Residents Advised to Prepare for Heavy Rainfall Event in Southern Alberta

Posted on Jun. 19 2025

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a significant weather warning for southern Alberta from Friday, June 20 to Monday, June 23, 2025. This system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, embedded thunderstorms, and strong wind gusts at a minimum.

What to expect

  • Showers and thunderstorms will begin Friday afternoon, with the heaviest rain falling Saturday through Sunday. Over 175 mm of total precipitation is possible in some areas.
  • While the Red Deer River levels are currently low, upstream outflows from Gleniffer Reservoir (now over 80% capacity) have increased in anticipation of the storm, raising downstream flow rates.
  • Potential Local Impacts
    • Flooding in low-lying areas and pooling on roads is likely
    • Gravel and dirt roads/alleys may become difficult to navigate
    • Smaller creeks and streams could rise quickly
    • Wind gusts up to 90 km/h may break tree limbs or down trees
  • Stay away from riverbanks. Fast-moving water and unstable footing may pose serious risks.

Prepare your property

  • Ensure eavestroughs and downspouts are clear and direct water away from your foundation, and your neighbour’s property.
  • Check that sump pumps are working properly
  • If your property is prone to overland flooding due to being in a low area, consider using sandbags to protect your home
